Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano 2019

Breathtaking purity of fruit here with such depth and presence. Full-bodied, yet you don’t see it. Weightless, this has a solid core of fruit plus refined and intense tannins that build in the finish. It’s rather endless and seamless. Give this four or five years to come around, but if you have a chance to taste it, don’t hold back. Best after 2028 and beyond.

Valdicava is a wine estate located in a valley of the same name in Montosoli in the north of Montalcino, Tuscany. The estate focuses solely on the production of Sangiovese, generally creating two expressions each year; a Rosso di Montalcino and a Brunello di Montalcino – and, in the very best years, the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano. The grapes for this flagship wine come from some of the oldest vines on the property, which were planted in 1970.

One of the pinnacles of what the Brunello grape variety (a local strain of Sangiovese) can achieve, Brunello di Montalcino is a global touchstone for the variety – and fantastic red wines in general.

One of Italy's (and the world's) greatest red wines, Brunello di Montalcino is a small wine region in southern central Tuscany, producing particularly impressive wines. In Tuscany, its homeland, it perhaps ranks alongside Chianti Classico. On global markets, it seems to command even greater attention.
